With the aim of further developing its strategy to become a Smart Tourist Destination, the Calp Town Council will monitor meteorological and atmospheric parameters throughout the municipality. To this end, it has begun installing a network of weather and air quality stations that will transmit data in real time and will be integrated into the council's Smart City Platform. The ultimate goal is to adopt efficient policies and evaluate measures to improve Calp's sustainability as a tourist destination, a fundamental aspect of smart tourism destinations.

On the one hand, three weather stations will be installed – in Plaza Colón, Plaza Mediterrani, and Casa Nova – which will complement the existing station located at the San Salvador Hermitage. These stations will record data on temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, ultraviolet radiation, wind speed and direction, as well as rainfall. On the other hand, four air quality monitoring stations are planned for installation – on Avenida de los Ejércitos Españoles, Avenida Rey Juan Carlos I, at Calp Town Hall, and on Avenida Masnou – which will measure the concentration of various air pollutants such as NO₂ (Nitrogen Dioxide), O3 (Tropospheric Ozone), CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), and CO (Carbon Monoxide).

In addition to providing real-time data, the new infrastructure will allow for the generation of historical data series to analyze the evolution of environmental conditions. Furthermore, the distribution of the stations across different points in the municipality will also facilitate the study of how the topography and surrounding environment influence atmospheric parameters. Environmental information will also be provided to residents and tourists about areas of tourist interest, such as beaches, which would allow for better planning of activities like surfing. Finally, understanding air quality analysis will help determine the impact of urban planning policies and road network redesigns.

The Calp City Council has awarded this contract to Peninsula Corporate Innovation SL for €47,320.38. The contract covers the supply and installation of a network of weather and air quality monitoring stations, as well as the integrated management software for the Smart City platform. This project is part of Calp's Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan (PSTD) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by Next Generation EU.

Environmental monitoring is one of three new areas to be incorporated into Calp's Smart City platform, along with smart irrigation and lighting. These initiatives have also been implemented within the PSTD framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by Next Generation EU.
