The Calp Town Council plans to install low-impact mooring systems soon on Cantal Roig and La Fossa beaches to protect the Posidonia seagrass meadows. This will allow boats to moor in these designated anchorages, thus avoiding the damage caused by traditional anchoring to this marine habitat, which is considered crucial for biodiversity and water quality.
A total of 20 mooring systems will be installed: 10 off Cantal Roig beach and 10 off the southern end of La Fossa beach, two areas with high volumes of recreational boat traffic. These beaches also contain meadows of two protected seagrasses: Cymodocea nodosa on Cantal Roig beach and Posidonia oceanica on La Fossa, considered the two most important marine plants in the Mediterranean.
Both species are included in the Valencian Government's Decree for the conservation of seagrass meadows in the Valencian Community, which stipulates that anchoring over these high-value meadows will only be permitted using low-impact systems.
The City Council recently awarded the contract for the supply and installation of these eco-friendly moorings to Sealand On Offshore Services SL for €42,000. This project forms part of Calp's Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan (PSTD) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by Next Generation EU funds.
