The Calp Town Council, through its Department of Culture, has begun the process of restoring the Gastón Castelló mosaic located in Plaza del Mosquit, one of the town's most unique artistic pieces and a heritage element of special value within the urban center.
To this end, the council will hire a specialist in the restoration of historical heritage to carry out a diagnostic assessment of the artwork's state of conservation. The mosaic, created by the Alicante-born painter Gastón Castelló in 1966, has not undergone comprehensive maintenance since its installation. Therefore, a detailed evaluation of its current condition is considered necessary after almost six decades of exposure to environmental conditions and the passage of time.
The expert will prepare a technical report analyzing both potential structural damage and surface alterations. This document will be fundamental in defining the consolidation, conservation, and restoration measures that must be implemented to ensure the mosaic's proper preservation.
The City Council emphasizes that this action reflects its commitment to protecting and promoting local artistic heritage, ensuring the preservation of a work that forms part of Calp's visual and historical identity. Future intervention will also allow for the proper maintenance of a creation linked to one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century Alicante art.
